Academics in GI/Hepatology: Past, Present and Future

Dr. Florence Wong, MB, BS, MD, FRACP, FRCPC, FAASLD

Professor of Medicine
University of Toronto

Florence Wong, MD is a Full Professor at the University of Toronto and staff Hepatologist at the Toronto General Hospital, Ontario, Canada. She received her medical degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia and completed her postgraduate specialist training in gastroenterology in Australia and in Toronto, Canada. Since graduation, she was recruited by the University of Toronto in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology as a clinician scientist. 

Dr. Wong has focused her clinical and research activities in renal dysfunction in advanced cirrhosis. She was involved with the International Club of Ascites in setting the definition of acute kidney injury- hepatorenal syndrome and conducted many of the associated clinical studies. She has also been the Chair of the Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure Special Interest Group of the American Association for the Study of the Liver and led many North American research projects on the same topic.

She has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, as well as contributing regular reviews, book chapters, editorials, and management guidelines for the treatment of ascites and hepatorenal syndrome for various academic organizations including the American Association for the Study of the Liver, the American Association of Gastroenterology and the American College of Gastroenterology. She is regularly invited as speaker at various scientific meetings. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of the Liver, and the recipient of the Gold Medal from the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, and the recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Association for the Study of the Liver, both for the contribution to scientific research in hepatology. She will be the recipient of the International Recognition Award  of the European Association for the Study of the Liver for 2026.
