Session #5: Advanced Resection and Management of Difficult Polyps

Learning Objectives:

  • Classify colorectal polyps using morphology, location, and optical features.
  • Recognize lesion and patient factors that define a difficult polyp.
  • Estimate the risk of submucosal invasive cancer from endoscopic assessment.
  • Decide whether to resect, refer for advanced endoscopic resection, or involve surgery.
  • Understand the appropriate endoscopic resection technique for the lesion.
  • Apply principles of complete resection, complication management, and post-resection surveillance.

Dr. Sunil Gupta, MD, PhD, FRACP

Assistant Professor, Division of Gastroenterology, University of Toronto

Dr. Sunil Gupta is an Interventional Endoscopist and Gastroenterologist at St Michael's Hospital. He is trained in all facets of interventional endoscopy, including ERCP, therapeutic EUS, EMR, ESD and POEM. Sunil recently completed his PhD at the University of Sydney, focusing on “Innovations and Paradigm Changes in Upper GI endoscopic tissue resection”. He has published widely and received numerous awards, including the National Scholar Award from UEG in 2022. He currently serves as a Co-editor for the journal ‘Endoscopy’ and is a committee member of the ASGE Standards of Practice Committee.
