Session #7: Incorporating Optical Diagnosis Into Everyday Practice

Dr. Robert Bechara is an Associate Professor at Queen’s University and an advanced therapeutic endoscopist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. His clinical and academic practice focuses on advanced luminal and third-space endoscopy, including optical diagnosis, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), and minimally invasive management of early gastrointestinal neoplasia, with particular interests in Barrett’s neoplasia and magnification.

He completed medical school at the University of Toronto, internal medicine and gastroenterology training at Queen’s University, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship training at St. Michael’s Hospital. He subsequently completed a one-year third-space endoscopy fellowship with Professor Haruhiro Inoue at Showa University in Tokyo, becoming the first Canadian to complete this formal training program.

Dr. Bechara has published extensively in advanced endoscopy, regularly teaches at national and international meetings, and is a Fellow of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society. He was named the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology’s 2026 to 2027 Visiting Clinical Professor.
