Session #11: Workup of Iron Deficiency Anemia/Obscure GI Bleeding (When to stop investigating, etc.)

Learning Objectives:

  • Appreciate the differences in the investigation and management of obscure GI bleeding (OGIB), or suspected small bowel bleeding, compared to upper/lower GI bleeding
  • Understand the investigative options available, including capsule endoscopy, CTE, and conservative management, and when to use them
  • Learn about treatment options available, including iron replacement, anti-VEGF medications, and deep enteroscopy
  • Leave the session with a practical approach to the work up of OGIB

Dr. Michael Sey is a gastroenterologist specializing in advanced endoscopy at the London Health Sciences Centre, an Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics at Western University, and a scientist in the Lawson Health Research Institute.  His clinical work focuses on EUS, EMR, ESD, capsule endoscopy, and DBE, and he serves as the Medical Director for Western’s Small Bowel Program.   His research focuses on gastrointestinal bleeding, advanced endoscopy, and quality in colonoscopy where he has led multiple randomized controlled trials, large cohort studies, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the field of gastroenterology.
